A simple garment that changed women's fashion

Shirtwaists are among the many garments, feathers and hats that are on display in the Museum’s Ladies Dress Shop. These three garments resemble blouses decorated with embroidery, and this case, black trim. But the shirtwaists are more than just garments. They are a sign of a far-reaching revolution, not just in fashion, but also for working women in the 19th century. The shirtwaist first appeared in the 1860s as an alternative to the matched skirt and bodice worn by nearly all well-dressed women. Modeled after a man’s shirt, the... [Lire la suite]

Fashion And Virtue

Throughout history, historians have always viewed textiles within their economic context rather than their place in fashion. It takes the seemingly simplistic development of textile pattern books in the 1520s and charts their progress in influencing the way fashion is disseminated to this day. Situated in the museum’s Robert Lehman Wing, the airy, glass-roofed atrium at the back of the museum, “Fashion and Virtue” takes a multi-faceted... [Lire la suite]

French dressing according to Carine Roitfeld

Even in a posh Parisian hotel at 10am on a Tuesday morning, Carine Roitfeld rocks a fierce look. Black pencil skirt, fishnet tights, a white shrunken T‑shirt printed with her own image, a leopard-print coat thrown over her shoulders – it’s vintage haute-punk Roitfeld, down to the smudgy black eyeliner and mussy brown hair. Roitfeld’s sexy uniform is usually a smattering of luxe, hot labels – Givenchy, Tom Ford or Christopher Kane – but today it’s head-to-toe high street. Everything she’s wearing she has designed as part of her new... [Lire la suite]
