Fashion funds kids' cause

Fashion isn't just about appearances for Perth designer Betty Tran. Tran, who established her eponymous label two years ago, is passionate about using her design skills to help empower women and support worthy causes. Tomorrow, the Cannington designer will showcase her latest collection, which debuted at New York Fashion Week in September, at the PMH Foundation's annual Melbourne Cup luncheon. Funds raised through the event will go directly to help children cared for at Princess Margaret Hospital. "It's been an amazing journey to... [Lire la suite]

Valentino Breaks the Couture Mold

Valentino has some big plans for its couture shows, and the changes don’t have that much to do with the traditional fashion schedule. In December, the fashion house is heading to New York City with an entirely new couture collection — its third this year, after the usual shows in January and July — to celebrate the opening of its Fifth Avenue store. Then there will be the usual couture show in January — not even a month later, and shown between pre-collection and men’s wear, which means the designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and... [Lire la suite]

At the Liberty Hotel, science meets fashion

Many guests at the fashion show at the Liberty Hotel last week didn’t realize they were watching research come down the runway. But that was the point. Organizers of Descience, a Cambridge-based competition that partners scientists with fashion designers, unveiled the project’s 15 finalists at the Oct. 23 Fashionably Late show including the winning look called Cytocouture, which translated MIT biomaterial engineer Laura Indolfi’s cell therapy research into dress form. The Blowout Tricks of a Secret Curly Girl

To a naturally straight-haired person, being a naturally curly haired person seems like a dream. When they want to wear it curly, they have the raw materials. When they want to wear it straight, they run a straightening iron through it, which is way easier than trying to wield a curling iron in any kind of uniform fashion. When they want it in-between, they can create perfect waves. (Like curl goddess Keri Russell these days.) The shape of curly hair follicles means hair doesn’t get as greasy, so they can go, like, 75 days without... [Lire la suite]

Inside the lavish, over-the-top world of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian's little princess

No, the frilly pink dress just would not do. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West stood together in Fred Segal October 11, surveying the iconic L.A. store's offerings for their daughter, North. Holding up the frock for closer examination, the power couple took in its textured flowers and decided it didn't fit the signature look of their 16-month-old. "They said North has a very particular style," says a staffer. "And right now they're only dressing her in black." Welcome to the magical and always luxurious world of North West, where Mom's... How to dress your age

Every October, the cool autumn air sends people into their attics and basements, where they claw through their trunk of threads to find the perfect outdoor outfit. And suddenly, nothing feels right. But only occasionally are the results shocking, if not terrifying. Scarier than any Halloween getup is the moment your winter wardrobe feels like a teenage costume. You may not be dressing your age. Research by UK retailer Debenhams has found that nine in 10 women try to dress younger than their years, with more than half saying they... [Lire la suite]

A wedding weekend, Webster-style

I had a pretty good weekend. My son got married on Saturday, and I am now officially a mother-in-law. We held the ceremony at a lodge at Camp Eastman, where about 50 close friends and family members watched my barefoot son Sean marry his sweetheart, Sarah King, now Mrs. Sarah Rosenberry. The fact that my son was barefoot will not surprise anyone who knows him very well, but is a good indication of the nontraditional nature of the event. It began with a social hour -- our hour and a half. Then when we knew everyone was there and... [Lire la suite]
