Boston company turns roadkill into fashion

Pamela Paquin's source for fashion is either "tres chic" or will make you shriek. She creates neck muffs, leg warmers, hats, purses and more from roadkill, or "accidental fur," as she prefers to call it. As owner of Petite Mort Furs, a 2-year-old Boston-area company, she said she's offering the fur industry an alternative to wild fur trapping and large-scale fur farms. "All this fur is being thrown away," Paquin said. "If we can pick that up, we never have to kill another fur-bearing animal again." Keith Kaplan, head of the Fur... [Lire la suite]

The 'Kate Middleton effect' on synagogue fashion

The so-called “Kate Middleton effect”—by which anything the Duchess of Cambridge wears becomes an instant best-seller—seems to know no bounds. She has graced the covers of countless magazines; entire blogs are devoted to what she wears. And, as it happens, the duchess is the perfect style icon for observant Jewish women. “She’s modest, demure and modern,” says Adi Heyman, founder of the fashion blog Fabologie. So it’s perhaps no surprise that one of Middleton’s signature style pieces—the fascinator—has caught on as a head covering... [Lire la suite]

Jonathan Saunders’s Fashion Brand Closes, What’s Next for the Designer

London has been absorbing the news that, after more than 10 years, there will be a hole in February’s Fashion Week: Jonathan Saunders is calling it a day. This year, he acquired a backer, Eiesha Bharti Pasricha, but evidently, despite the best efforts of both parties, the arrangement did not come in time to put his label on an even keel. The decision to cease trading was “amicable,” Saunders said in an email. “My investor has been such a good partner. I just want to try new things and approach my work in a different way.” Saunders’s... [Lire la suite]

Meet the women at the forefront of Winnipeg's fashion scene

The Instagram following of one Winnipeg fashion stylist is 65,000 and counting, and a local clothing designer is striving to represent as many individuals as possible in her collection.   Both young women are at the forefront of fashion in the city, yet their approach to style could not be more different.   Bella McFadden, 20, is known online — and around the world — as Internetgirl, a name she came up with when she was 17.   Her followers — many of them eager to buy McFadden's clothing — are based in... Ban underfed and underage models in fashion, MPs urged

Models have urged MPs to consider tougher rules for the fashion industry, describing catwalks full of models with advanced eating disorders, some surviving solely on popcorn. Rosie Nelson, whose Change.org petition calling for new laws for health standards in the fashion industry has attracted more than 110,000 signatures, told the all-party parliamentary group on body image that she had constantly been urged to lose weight, with one agency saying she needed to be “down to the bone”. “Friends at shows saw models who fainted and had... Swedish fashion brand makes Cebu debut

SWEDISH retail brand H&M (Hennes & Mauritz) is opening its doors to Cebuano shoppers at the Ayala Center Cebu today. Top officials are confident the brand, which was long clamored for by Filipinos to enter the Philippine market, will get a positive reception among Cebuanos similar to long queues experienced during its opening day in Manila last year. H&M Cebu is the biggest H&M store in the Philippines to date. The store covers three floors that occupy 3,800 square meters of Ayala Center Cebu’s leasable space. “We... [Lire la suite]

The common style mistakes men always make

You've got to own it. That's the No 1 rule in the corporate man's style book, if he was to have such a thing. Which, for some, mightn't be a bad idea because fashion blunders abound in the executive workplace. One of the biggest occurs when a man isn't sure what he likes and is swayed by trends that have little to do with his own style. You know the sort of thing – beards on the shorter man; huge checks on the thin man; tattoos. "Guys who wish to get on in the corporate world will have more success by following their own authentic... [Lire la suite]

'Fashion Outlaws' in focus for show at Massillon Museum

MASSILLON A contraption with steel hoops that resembles a birdcage, or a torture device, is one of the first artifacts you’ll see in “Fashion Outlaws” at the Massillon Museum. When you consider that this was worn under a woman’s voluminous skirt in the 1870s, the new exhibition’s theme — about confinement, mobility, women’s rights, rebellion — begins to coalesce. Next to this daunting crinoline is a corset-like garment that is tightly laced and tiny. “You would not have been able to raise your arms,” said Heather Hayden, the... [Lire la suite]

The New Home Decor Collection Making Tie-Dye Seriously Chic

Designer Kalen Kaminski—whose style is informed by her Boulder, Colorado, upbringing and a connectedness to nature as well as her time living in NYC—debuted her fashion label, Upstate, in 2011. Known for her highly patterned pieces that are all made in America, Kaminski creates designs using a Shibori dyeing technique, giving them each a special, one-of-a-kind feel. The Brooklyn-based brand has evolved into a full-fledged fashion range that, as of this week, includes home decor. The 22-piece collection of bedding ($140 to $350),... [Lire la suite]
