‘Wild Tales’ Boldly Catalogs the State of Civilization

Road rage, parking fines and weddings are unlikely subjects designed to showcase criminal inhumanity, but “Wild Tales” – from Argentina – takes those common themes and provides some lessons on the breakdown of our civilizaton, in a momentous prologue and five stellar stories. Personally, this is the nominated film that should have won the Best Foreign Language Film, because of its commonality and recognizable expression. After the audacious prologue, the titles are shown over animals in the wild, which in actuality we still are, and... [Lire la suite]

Yasmin Eleby, a kindergarten teacher in Houston, hadn’t been in a serious relationship for six years. But the lack of a significant other didn’t stop her from getting hitched and inviting 160 guests to the Houston Museum of African American Culture to witness the occasion. A couple from Victoria who love Star Trek agreed Vulcan would be the “most logical place to have a wedding.” Newlyweds Ralph and Liz (born Lowe) Busch spoke with media at the Trekcetera Museum on Saturday, Jan. 17 following a private ceremony. The day was chosen specifically because of the Starship Enterprise’s designation number, 1701. Ralph said it was originally his mother’s suggestion to get married in Vulcan. Although she’s not a Trek fan, “she knows that I’ve been a Star Trek fan all my life,” he said. “When she heard that we... [Lire la suite]

A wedding weekend, Webster-style

I had a pretty good weekend. My son got married on Saturday, and I am now officially a mother-in-law. We held the ceremony at a lodge at Camp Eastman, where about 50 close friends and family members watched my barefoot son Sean marry his sweetheart, Sarah King, now Mrs. Sarah Rosenberry. The fact that my son was barefoot will not surprise anyone who knows him very well, but is a good indication of the nontraditional nature of the event. It began with a social hour -- our hour and a half. Then when we knew everyone was there and... [Lire la suite]

Daughter's wedding as spectacular as the bride

When I first saw her in the ivory wedding dress, beautifully designed with Swarovski crystals and seed pearls, I was overcome with emotion. She was so elegant and her face glowed like I had never seen it glow before that day. My daughter, Mary, was about to be married and it was as special as the day she was born. My little girl had grown up so fast, and here she was standing right before me, smiling and so beautiful. The dress fit her perfectly, the train flowing away from her body in such a magnificent way. My little girl – 29 now... [Lire la suite]
